Linda S. Carter
Linda has spent her entire career uplifting marginalized and middle-class communities. Locally she served as a member of the Plainfield City Council for nearly two decades. Subsequently, as a member of the Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders, she became the first African American female to serve as Chair of the Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders (now Commissioners) earning a reputation as a bold progressive, and pragmatic trailblazer willing to take on a wide array of challenges affecting her communities. In 2018, Carter, a lifelong resident of the City of Plainfield, joined the New Jersey General Assembly representing the 22nd Legislative District, comprised of municipalities located Union & Somerset Counties. Currently she serves as the Chair of the Higher Education Committee and is a member of the Transportation Committee. The youngest of her siblings, she graduated from the University of Maryland, Eastern Shore where she earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. Assemblywoman Carter also holds a Master of Science degree in Management, Information Management from Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken.
Assemblywoman Carter is employed by the Passaic Board of Education as a High School Business Education Teacher. She is a proud member of the Theta Phi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. a sorority that has been at the forefront of effective advocacy and social change, serving in several leadership positions including Chapter President for four terms. Assemblywoman Carter is also a member of the New Jersey Board of Realtors.
